Reports to: Executive Director of News Content & Development

Overview
NET-TV, New York’s Catholic Station is looking for a seasoned journalist to help take a multi-platform news organization in the New York City area to the next level. The EP of special projects will be responsible for creating high-quality content for the station’s flagship program Currents News. They will plan special coverage, produce segments for the nightly newscasts, and will contribute to writing and approving anchor and reporter scripts. This person will also play a role in the launch of future news and information programs. They will collaborate with the print and digital departments to develop cross-promotional opportunities. This candidate must have excellent news judgment and be able to find the common thread that runs through secular and religious news and present it to the audience in a compelling way. They must have a solid understanding of journalism ethics and know when to raise red flags about potential legal issues. This position goes way beyond just covering diocesan events. It’s about reporting how faith plays a role in people’s lives and presenting the Catholic perspective on big international, national, and local stories.

Responsibilities

  • Pitch and produce special topical segments for Currents News that include but not limited to packages, graphics, and on-set interviews
  • Plan and supervise production of material for special coverage of papal trips
  • Develop and produce promotable franchises
  • Travel to on-location special projects shoots and stories (locally, nationally, and internationally), as needed
  • Edit and approve scripts for nightly program, Currents News
  • Substitute for EP of Currents News during absences and vacations
  • Collaborate with marketing and digital departments to promote content
  • Stay on top of current events that relate to the Catholic audience
  • Work with the Executive Director of News & Development to special events

Background and Experience

  • 8+ years working in TV news as a journalist and producer
  • Degree in journalism or communications or relevant studies
  • Exceptional organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • Strong and proven ability to multi-task and to work under deadlines
  • Excellent news judgment with ability to break down complicated material concise and compelling segments
  • Proficient in social media and newsroom management systems
  • Proficient in non-linear editing on Adobe Premiere
  • Basic knowledge of Catholic Church, teachings, and traditions
